VELUX Skylight Specialist is defined less by a checklist than by a business model: VELUX describes it as a company, or a division of one, fully dedicated to skylight and Sun Tunnel installations day in and day out, handling full-service projects from a single skylight swap to complex multi-unit jobs, with product knowledge spanning the entire VELUX line. Where the broader Certified Installer tier covers roofers and remodelers who completed VELUX training locally, Specialists receive the highest standard of certification at a VELUX facility and commit to service standards set out in the program's requirements. The designation comes in two flavors: Skylight Specialist and Signature Skylight Specialist, the latter being an elevated recognition VELUX awards within the same Specialist network. VELUX does not publish distinct criteria separating the two - both describe dedicated skylight businesses committing a high percentage of their work to VELUX products - and companies holding either remain rare compared to the much larger Certified Installer pool. Some longtime Specialists also carry the program's legacy 5-Star branding, which referred to this same top tier.
The specialization itself is the substance, on either flavor. A contractor installing skylights every working day accumulates depth that occasional installers do not: shaft construction and drywall returns on interior-finished installs, curb versus deck-mounted decisions, sizing and placement for light rather than just weathertightness, solar-powered and vented units with shades and controls, and the flashing integration details across roofing materials where nearly all skylight failures originate. Specialists typically run the full project - consultation, product selection, installation, and interior finish - rather than treating the skylight as one line item on a reroof, and VELUX positions its trained pros as offering no-obligation on-site consultations and standing behind its three-layer water protection.
Calibration for homeowners: either version is the strongest specialization signal in the skylight niche, and the right match for skylight-driven projects - new openings, multiple units, Sun Tunnels, or a leak-plagued existing install. Treat the Signature label as a distinction within the top tier rather than a separate rung above it; since VELUX publishes no criteria for it, there is no verifiable gap between the two flavors. The broader caveats also still apply. It is a company-level manufacturer partnership, not an independent audit, so licensing, insurance, and workmanship need checking on their own merits. And the product warranty follows proper installation rather than the badge itself - a Certified Installer roofer following VELUX's instructions preserves the same coverage - so the Specialist premium buys depth and single-trade focus, not different warranty paper.
